The precision of care

The Discipline of Presence, Learning, and Becoming

Prologue

From precision in the laboratory,
to presence in the operating room,
to patience in early moments of reading

This personal essay examines what it means to be a human-centered scientist through dentistry. It explores how technical precision, scientific rigor, and emotional awareness intersect in patient care. Drawing on my experiences as a pre-dental student, it investigates how clinicians balance ambition and compassionate care.

From repetition and discipline,
to adaptation in moments of uncertainty,
to learning how to sit beside others in their growth

This work traces how care is formed through practice, mentorship, and experience across clinical and personal spaces.

Beside me stands my younger self, a stethoscope draped around my neck, curious about what it means to care for others

When you look past the white coats and credentials, who are healthcare professionals?

Excellence anchored in service began to take on new meaning when I stepped out of the lab and into the operating room at Weill Cornell Hospital this past summer.

As the cold Italian ices met the warm summer days, I would stretch the conversations for as long as I could as we strolled around the block.

Drawing from these experiences, I began to see that technical mastery in healthcare is essential yet insufficient on its own.

My name is Sydney Eisenstein!

I am from New York City and I am graduating from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Health, and Society, along with my minor in Writing. My work explores the intersection of science, care, and the human experience, particularly through the lens of dentistry. When I am not deep in classwork, you can find me watching Grey’s Anatomy, drinking iced coffee, playing sudoku, going to hot pilates, or spending time with friends.

Thank you so much for visiting!
